Company Info and Fundamentals

The Company was incorporated on 26 October 1998 to be the holding company of the Group. The Group's principal activities are providing integrated medical and healthcare facilities and services for primary to tertiary level, providing hospital management, project management and consulting services and training of nurses and other allied health professionals as well as management development programs for hospital administrators and managers.


HMI owns and operates HMI Balestier Hospital which started operations in 1991. It secured its first project management and technical services consultancy contract in 1995 for HMI Hospital Pakar Larkin; the proposed development was put on hold during the economic crisis. In 1998, it acquired a 20 percent stake in Excellent Strategy Sdn Bhd (ESSB), the company which owns and operates Mahkota Medical Centre in Malacca, Malaysia. The hospital is also managed by the Group. The Group has subsequently increased its equity interest in ESSB to 46.7 percent. As the single largest shareholder and control of the Board, the Group is deemed the ultimate holding company of ESSB with effect from 28 June 2002.

In 2003, the Group focused its efforts to (i) reposition the Group for growth in its two core businesses, Healthcare and Education; (ii) develop the Group's education arm, HMI Institute of Health Sciences as a premier provider specialising in healthcare career training; and (iii) strengthen its healthcare delivery and hospital management services in Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Company changed its name to Health Management International Ltd wef 30 October 2000.
