LONDON: A MALAYSIAN rubber engineering laboratory which houses a new anti-seismic component testing facility has opened at the Tun Abdul Razak Rubber Research Centre (TARRC) in Brickendonbury, Hertfordshire, putting Malaysia in the forefront of cutting-edge seismic protection technology.
Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) director-general Datuk Dr Zairossani Mohd Nor said the £2.5 million (RM13.4 million) laboratory featured a large rubber component test machine to analyse full-scale bearings under earthquake conditions, as well as the capability to test other large structural rubber-based bearings.
“The launch of the laboratory represents a significant achievement for MRB, as well as for TARRC and the rubber industry in Malaysia.
“It represents the ability of TARRC to provide services to the rubber industry, particularly for Malaysian manufacturers to penetrate the world market,” he said at the facility’s launch on Tuesday.
Zairossani said the Malaysian rubber industry was on a par with other engineering rubber product manufacturers worldwide including those in Europe, Japan, and China.
“This is a major achievement for us,” he said after a tour of the laboratory to look at the 216 sq m facility that houses a control room, a seismic lab and servo-hydraulic testing machines.
MRB board chairman Sankara Narayanan Nair said the machine would ensure that Malaysia remained competitive.
Present were TARRC director Dr Fauzi Mohd Som and engineers responsible for the laboratory.
Speaking to the New Sunday Times after the launch, TARRS deputy director of research Hamid Ahmadi said the lab’s research could be used to save lives and the contents in earthquake-affected buildings.
